With the state of the economy these days, a versatile degree, such as Business Administration, seems like a good idea in order to get a good job. However, you may feel that the market is flooded with Business Administration graduates who aren’t working, or find that businesses don’t ask about your degree in the interview process. So is a Business Administration degree really worth it?
What is a Business Administration Degree?
A Bachelor of Business Administration, sometimes referred to as a BBA, is a four-year degree. The goal of this degree is to prepare students for a career in business, specifically to move up to a management or other leadership role. The coursework provides a solid foundation of business education covering a wide variety of topics including accounting, business law, marketing and human resources. Students may follow a general program of study, or decide to specialize in a particular area.
Depending on what is offered at your college or university, you may choose to earn a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration or a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration. A Bachelor of Arts may require additional courses, such as a foreign language.
Students may choose to go on and earn a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) for further study. A Masters of Business Administration is an opportunity for students to delve deeper into business administration studies. It allows students to move up in the business world, particularly to high-level, executive and leadership positions.
Do I Really Need a Business Administration Degree?
Some people will say a Business Administration degree is necessary for anyone who wants to work in the business world. Others will say that many companies place more emphasis on experience. Whether you have a college degree in another field, or no degree at all, working in the business field can be a valuable “education.”
Regardless of what is required for a position, a Business Administration degree provides you with a strong educational foundation for a career in the business world. In addition to basic business knowledge, the degree helps you learn to apply information, implement business strategy, and become a strong team leader, all of which help make you an asset to your future business.
Ultimately, you have to decide for yourself if a degree in Business Administration is necessary for your career path. If you want to continue to move up in the company, it may be necessary. However, if your career path does not require a degree, and you are happy with that track in the company, the extra time and expense of a degree may not be worth it to you. As long as you make a decision based on what you want to do to achieve your career goals, your decision will be the best for you.
